So, you’re in a new job environment and have no clue what to do with yourself. The good news is you’ll learn all that you need to in no time through onboarding and training. But what are some things you can do or keep in mind when learning all of the ins and outs of the company?

First and foremost, ask yourself what it is that you want to learn and accomplish, whether it’s gaining experience that will lead to a specific career or exploring different fields to see what interests you. Sit down, reflect on what you want, and set these goals and intentions so that you have something to focus on and work toward. Knowing where your values lie can help you prioritize and make the most of this opportunity you have. Then there’s stepping into the role and learning all that you need to know.

Stepping into any new situation calls for an open mind. Being open and receptive will help you engage with all of the new information you’re learning. Soak up everything you can and ask any questions that come up. Questions big or small, it’s important to get them all out there to help you understand as much as possible. Asking questions now is better than being stuck once you realize you have no idea what you’re doing.

Keep that line of communication open past just asking questions. Let the team in on what you’re doing. Who knows, someone might have valuable insights or tips about what you’re working on. Communicating can help the team work together and be more efficient. Talking to your team can also help you better understand how the company functions and the dynamics within the company.

Stepping into a new role can be an intimidating task, but once you’ve acclimated to your environment is when the actual fun begins. Learn how to walk now so that you can run in the future.
